St. Benedict left the decadence of Rome in the 5th century (very parallel to American consumerism) to live on the outskirts as a hermit. He later created a monastery and made a Rule. The Rule of St. Benedict was an outline for a monk’s day. Benedict combined prayer with manual labor and created one of the most successful and sustainable spiritual communities in Christian history, that’s lasted over 16 centuries. (more…)

Burning Tolstoy On The Highway

I heard a story once about a man who went on a bicycle-touring trip from Alaska to the Lower 48 (that’s what Alaskans call the contiguous states). It took me four days by car when I came down as a sophomore in college; it takes weeks or months on a bike. (more…)
